The Do’s & Dont’s of Wearing Your Jewelry to the Beach or Pool

Summer is here and many Chicagoans are beating the heat by heading to the lake! While you're packing your beach bag with sunscreen, towels, and snacks, you might be tempted to throw in some of your favorite jewelry to complete your look. However, wearing jewelry to the beach comes with its own set of guidelines to ensure you look stylish without risking damage or loss. Here are some do’s and don’ts to consider before accessorizing for a day in the water.

Do’s:

Wear a Faux Engagement Ring

Losing your engagement ring is a quick way to ruin a day of fun in the sun. Our hands often shrink when we are in cool water causing rings to easily slip off our fingers. We understand wanting to always wear your ring, so we suggest purchasing a faux ring to wear. We love the idea of opting for this beautiful Swarovski crystal ring on our beach days.

Wear Solid Metal Jewelry

If you must wear jewelry, consider pieces made of materials that can withstand water exposure. Stainless steel, platinum, and certain types of treated leather can handle splashes from the ocean without tarnishing or corroding. Avoid pieces that are plated or semi-solid.

Secure Your Jewelry

Ensure that your jewelry is securely fastened. Double-check clasps and backs of earrings before leaving the house. Consider wearing pieces that have safety clasps or extra secure fittings to minimize the risk of them falling off and getting lost in the sand or water.

Clean Your Jewelry Afterwards

Saltwater, sand, and sunscreen can all contribute to the buildup of grime on your jewelry. When you return home, gently clean your pieces with mild soap and water, and dry them thoroughly to prevent any potential damage or tarnishing.

Use a Jewelry Pouch

If you do decide to bring extra jewelry to the beach, keep it in a small, secure pouch when you’re not wearing it. This can help protect it from sand and saltwater.

Dont's:

Avoid Expensive and Sentimental Pieces

The beach is not the place for your most precious jewelry. Expensive pieces, family heirlooms, or items with significant sentimental value should be left at home. The risk of losing them or damaging them is too high, and it’s not worth the worry.

Say No to Soft Metals and Gemstones

Soft metals like gold and silver, as well as certain gemstones like opals and pearls, can be easily damaged by the elements. Chlorine, saltwater and sand can scratch, tarnish, or erode these materials. Stick to more durable options if you must wear jewelry.

Avoid Loose-Fitting Jewelry

Loose bracelets, rings, and necklaces are more likely to slip off unnoticed, especially when you’re swimming or playing in the sand. Choose pieces that fit snugly and are less likely to come off accidentally.

Don’t Overdo It

Less is more when it comes to beach jewelry. Overloading yourself with accessories can be uncomfortable and impractical. A few well-chosen pieces can enhance your beach look without causing inconvenience or posing a risk of loss or damage.

Avoid Sunscreens & Lotions

Apply sunscreen before putting on your jewelry to avoid getting residue on your pieces. Some ingredients in sunscreen can cause tarnishing or buildup on metals and gemstones.

By following these do’s and don’ts, you can enjoy your beach day in style without worrying about your jewelry. Remember, the goal is to have fun and relax, so choose your accessories wisely and focus on creating lasting memories on the water.
